Andy Gehrz: ANCIENT ASTROLOGY: BEYOND THE TETRABIBLOS
7:30 PM - 9:30 PM, Building C, Room C210
For the past five years, Andy has been studying ancient Greek and Latin in order to render ancient astrological texts into English. During this lecture, she will present the ancient concepts that she has uncovered, from both Porphyry of Tyre's book "An Introduction to the Tetrabiblos" as well as the content of Vettius Valens' first book of his anthology. These concepts will prove enlightening for any serious student of astrology. Andy will include such topics as the concept of "sect" within the chart, planetary beam theory, aspects, the ascensional times of the signs, "ultimate rulership" within the nativity, and more.
Andy Gehrz has been a practicing astrologer for over ten years in Portland, Oregon. She has done countless readings, with her current areas of research being relationship astrology, children's astrology, remediation, and geniuses. Andy also translates ancient Greek texts into readable and clear English, her audience being modern astrologers who want to study the history of the field of astrology. Her first Greek translation entitled "An Introduction to the Tetrabiblos by Porphyry of Tyre" won an Independent Publishing award in the "Philosophy and Classics" division, and she is soon to publish her second book, a delightfully clear translation of Vettius Valens.

Rob Hand: IAD SF 2012 Post Conference Workshop AN INTRODUCTION TO MEDIEVAL NATAL CHART ANALYSIS
10:30 AM - 5:30 PM, Building C, Room C370, with Break for Lunch
After several years of working with techniques of medieval natal astrology, it is now becoming clear exactly how to organize the examination of the natal chart and to reach conclusions regarding an individual's health, earning capacity, career, relationships and all of the other issues that modern astrologers want to look at. The medieval approach is extremely systematic but not difficult to learn. Participants will have hands-on experience with their own charts. All participants should have a reasonable knowledge of basic modern natal astrology.
Rob Hand has been a student of astrology since 1960 and a full-time professional astrologer since 1972. His books include Planets in Composite, Planets in Transit, Planets in Youth, Horoscope Symbols and Essays on Astrology, and a number of shorter works on traditional astrology. He has been actively translating traditional astrological texts from Latin for several years in connection with his company ARHAT. In June 2011 the Hands moved their home and company to Las Vegas, Nevada, and established Arhat Media Ltd. He is planning soon to offer on the web, lectures and courses in his methods in astrology. He is also working on his Ph.D. dissertation in medieval history at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, and is currently Chairman of the Board of Kepler College. Jessica Murray: PLUTO AND OIL
7:30 PM - 9:30 PM, Building C, Room C210
Since the advent of the Industrial Age the archetype of oil has become darker, more dangerous, more compulsive—in a word, more Plutonian. I propose we extend oil’s governance from Neptune alone to a joint rulership with Pluto. Let them share the crown. The designation of Neptune as a sole ruler ignores one of the most definitive and evocative of oil’s characteristics: that the stuff is dug up from underground. It is Pluto that governs underground riches, and in the collective imagination, it is oil that has for the past several decades replaced spice, gold, silver and gems as the premier symbol of global value. But it is not for its use value alone that countries want oil, any more than it is for practical reasons that people have always coveted gold. The extremism (Pluto) with which these resources are desired -- as with those seized by "gold fever" -- slips easily into pathology, with fatal consequences. I would argue that a Plutonian resource is one that has acquired connotations of death and destruction. .... In the 19th Century, the USA took over as global superpower, riding high on the wave of the Industrial Age, whose complexly interconnected systems of manufacture, infrastructure, transportation and distribution depend—with almost total singularity—upon this one product: ancient dinosaur slime.
Jessica Murray has been writing cultural commentary and practicing astrology in San Francisco for thirty-five years, after graduating from Brown University in 1973 with a degree in fine arts and linguistics. She is the author of Soul-Sick Nation: An Astrologer's View of America (Jessica Murray MotherSky Press, 2008) and is working on another for 2012 about the relevance of astrology in turbulent times. She maintains a private practice in chart interpretation, offers lectures and a blog on her Web site, www.MotherSky.com, and a column for DayKeeper Journal (www.daykeeperjournal.com).

Dale O'Brien: (SKY-) HIGH CRIMES: URANUS TRANSITS RECONSIDERED
7:30 PM - 9:30 PM, Building C, Room C210
Modern astrologers for the most part tend to primarily think forward, manipulating arbitrary keywords to tell us what is to come for us as individuals, for the country, and for the world. Most modern astrologers say that Uranus "rules" astrology. In Greek mythology, Prometheus' name means "forethought." Many years ago, Richard Tarnas made a strong persuasive case for astrological Uranus to be of the nature of Prometheus. However, Tarnas emphasized the beneficial contributions of this Titan who stole fire from high up on Mount Olympus (where Earth meets Sky). A look back at current recent history shows a less exalted side of Uranus/Prometheus: THIEF, and seldom a "Robin Hood“. As Uranus-the-Thief broke into and ravaged each Zodiacal sign, something human and precious was stolen. We will examine the origin of Fox News, "Shock-and-Awe," and two Billionaire brothers hijack lots of politicians and lots of "independent" citizens. Some actual stories of personal Uranus transits will also be shared, Most importantly, what we might do about this Troublemaker --- and why will be discussed.
Dale O'Brien, 61, has studied astrology since 1969 and is a certified full-time astrologer and Astro*Carto*Graphy Interpreter since 1991. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and is a former Federal Government employee. Besides personal astrological and A*C*G consultations, Dale has taught astrology to non-astrologers as well as astrology students from beginning to advanced levels. He has presented for local, regional and international astrological conferences and has shared astrology on FM and internet radio. His articles have appeared in The Mountain Astrologer and other publications. He is also trained in Dream Tending (Pacifica Graduate Institute). He lives in “green” Eugene, Oregon. Elliot Tanzer: EVALUATING ASTRO*CARTO*GRAPHY MAPS – How Changing Your Location Can Change Your Life!
10:30 AM - 5:30 PM, Building C, Room C-210, with Break for Lunch
In this hands on Workshop you will use your own A*C*G Map to learn: The secret to accurate ACG Map evaluations as taught by Jim Lewis in his Certification Course. As some of you might know, the instructions found in Jim Lewis' Astro*Carto*Graphy Manual are not very clear. And no instructions are given with mapping programs for the home computer. How to prep an ACG Map to personalize it and bring it graphically alive. This is the method Elliot has developed as a result of doing over 1500 A*C*G Map evaluations since 1995 – basically how to indicate the best and worst areas, and then use the Latitude Crossings for fine tuning the results to determine within those areas that are considered the best, which ones are even better. How to interpret the planetary lines and Latitude Crossings, so they tell a story of what one's life will be like in any given location, and how the promises and potentials of the birth chart will be enhanced or suppressed. Health and relationship implications of each of the planetary lines, and how these issues change for better or worst when relocating. How to transpose the final results onto a World Atlas in order to see exactly which cities and typography are situated in areas determined to be best.

Dorothy Kovach: IT’S YOUR FUTURE: Everything you ever wanted to know about prediction… but were afraid to ask
Noon - 4:00 PM, Building C, Room C230
Western astrologers are often very well versed on how each outer planetary transit affects them, but all too often, know very little or nothing about the celestial cycles they are presently experiencing. These cycles, or ‘time czars’ will almost always overshadow even the transit of Pluto. Utilizing the methods of the ancients of the east and west, we will explore the best times to push forward, and most importantly, when to pull back. Armed with multiple charts, such as profections, shadow charts, and real life situations, we will learn to make predictions that come true, not just once in a while, but on a regular basis. Come join us and see how astrology can be a beacon of light in murky times.
Dorothy Kovach is an astrologer, writer and researcher who utilizes the traditional methods of both east and west. Her specialties are horary and finding the ‘best times’ to start projects for success. She was a contributing editor for the first traditional astrology magazine of its kind, ‘The Horary Practitioner.’ A decade and a half ago, she began to apply ancient methods to the markets and has never looked back. She correctly called the tech/dot-com bubble burst five years ahead, and warned her clients off the markets well before the 2008 debacle. More recently, she predicted the demise of the then-mighty Euro to a very skeptical audience. She has been writing the economic trends for Llewellyn’s Moon Sign Book since 2001. Her predictions have been featured on www.msnbc.com. Her clients hail from six of the seven continents. She can be reached via her website: www.worldastrology.net or dstar@mcn.org.

Don Cerow: MYTH, ASTRONOMY AND ASTROLOGY: Mythology And The Roots Of Astrology Workshop
10:30 AM - 5:30 PM, Building C, Room C-370, with Break for Lunch
Mythology and Astrology are branches of the same tree. Together, they are rooted in a common soil and draw nourishment from a way of looking at life. By examining two works from the Classical tradition, we find the key to this unity opening ancient mysteries from the past, and offering insights into both our present, and the future. Homer's Iliad, the oldest work in the western literary tradition, lays out the astrological year in its chapters, providing specific examples of behavior influenced by the twelve signs of the zodiac. It is a choreography of the seasons and how they affect us as individuals. Written almost one thousand years earlier than our oldest translated works on astrology (Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos), it is a fascinating glimpse of life in what is still held as basic astrological principles today. The second key is Ovid's Fasti, a work on the Roman calendar, illustrating how astrological motion and lunar phases provide direct evidence of planetary placement and the myths which are associated with them. One of the earliest uses of astrology and astronomy was to set up the calendar in an effort to coordinate time. Time now gives us back the same key to reopen the door of mystery in the myths.
Don Cerow is a certified NCGR Level IV astrologer known for the warmth, insight and depth he brings to his counseling practice. An astrologer since ‘72, his interest has been in how astrology evolved from the mythology and astronomy of ancient peoples. He received a degree in Classics, Magna cum Laude from UMass in ‘76, has been writing a weekly column (www.AthenasWeb.com) for various newspapers since ‘83, and in 2003 reconstructed an early model of Stonehenge in a story picked up by the New York Times. In ‘05 he wrote and produced a multi-media show for Fiske Planetarium at the U of Colorado, Boulder entitled Star, Myths and Dragons, pushing back the limits of what our forbearers knew about the heavens. This same theme is now a book entitled The Dragon’s Path. He's produced shows for radio and television and taught at colleges, universities and planetariums across the country.
